A Bit About Me
Hi folks, I'm Mikaila. I'm a Speech-Language Pathologist in training, set to graduate in Spring 2019. I'm here to share my graduate school experience with all of you other SLPs to be out there! I'll be discussing my experiences with clinic/practicum, classwork, various therapy materials, being a TA, and so much more. I hope I can provide valuable insight for other grad students, undergrads looking forward to grad school, and those just beginning to look into the profession.

(And heck, maybe some "grown up" SLPs too!)

So, Why "Squirrelly Speech?"
When I was in my Language and Literacy class in undergrad, I wrote a hefty paper on language and literacy considerations for children with ADHD... and I got a really into it. It's really an area that gets overlooked a lot; speech and language problems in children with ADHD are so often written off as a result of the attention difficulties rather than as disorders in their own right. It became a bit of a passion project, and if I ever pursue a PhD, that will likely be my area of research.

In addition to my discovery of ADHD as a research interest, my brother has ADHD, which led me to ponder this area in the first place. Here's the interesting part... fast forward a year or so, and I was diagnosed with ADHD myself! My interest was in the right area all along, I suppose! So, given all of that, "Squirrelly Speech" seemed like a unique and memorable blog title that also fits me really well. And here we are!

Gearing Up for Grad School - Part One

So, you got into grad school First of all, congratulations! You’ve worked hard, you’ve crossed your fingers, and somehow it all worked out in the end. Now, here you are, wondering what’s next. Looking back to last year when I was getting ready to start grad school, I had a lot of feelings. I was excited but nervous, eager but uncertain, and definitely insecure about my own abilities as a future clinician and whether or not I’d be successful. I remember scouring the web for any information I could find about what grad school would entail as a future SLP. I didn’t find much, but here I am. I’ve endured three semesters and I’m still here. As my clinic director says, “Grad school hasn’t killed anybody yet.” First steps Number one is important: breathe . You will get through this. You will eventually get all of the information you’re feverishly searching for on the web. You won’t be behind the eight ball if you arrive on day one not knowing everything there is to know about be...

Welcome to Squirrelly Speech

Hi all! I'm Mikaila, a Speech-Language Pathologist in progress. I'm just finishing up my first year of graduate school and thought I'd start this blog to share some of my experience with the world. There's quite a lot of information out there on being an SLP, but not much on being a grad student... and let's face it, we could all use a reminder from time to time that we're not alone on this stressful, exciting, constantly changing ride to our CCC. I plan to share about all of the little things that come along with this journey. Expect to learn about my clinic and practicum experiences, classwork, being a TA, therapy materials I like, and so much more. I hope you enjoy the content I share. I can't wait to get started!
